The environment is one of the main subject Studio MILO has at its heart and attention to it is fundamental while implementing new design and architectural solutions. Studio MILO reconfirms its presence in Ibiza:  from a  landscape project,  to its of choice a secret hidden place, Studio  MILO meets Sandra  Sandra Benbeniste, the executive manager of Ibiza Preservation Fund, to discuss the relationship of architecture, design and environment

Set away from the local scene, La Granja Ibiza is the perfect escape from today’s frenetic life.  Surrounded by more than ten hectares of unspoiled landscape, the structure reflects the typical style of an 18th century Spanish estate. Marked by classical Iberian architecture and traces of Moorish influences, La Granja represents an oasis where visitors indulge in the simplicity of the natural and authentic spirit of the island.

INTERVIEW

Ibiza Preservation Fund is an important institution within the Balearic Islands, what it’s history?

The Ibiza Preservation Fund (IPF) aims to help preserve Ibiza’s exceptional beauty and natural value, currently threatened by the development of mass tourism and the real estate boom, and to promote sustainable initiatives. The Fund, set up in 2008 by William Aitken and Serena Cook, raises money from Ibiza supporters all around the world with the aim of supporting cutting-edge environmental initiatives carried out by local organisations, or other Spanish authorities that try to influence policies on the island.

What role do design and architecture play in raising public awareness on such an important issue as the environment ?

Design and architecture both have an important role. Architects and Designers whether restoring existing buildings or integrating new ones into the landscape can really help the cause by optimising and planning their designs maintaining an healthy respect for the environment. A model that I would like to mention is the Water Alliance. Water is a critical issue on the Balearic Islands due to the overall lack of rain. While planning, architects and landscapers should pay attention to implement eco – friendly gardens by using native plants that need little water and are in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Water Tanks that collect the rain to be re-used for gardening could represent a major contribution in preservation of the environment. Architects could support the cause by designing water tanks that are also aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Ibiza has experienced a construction boom over the last decade.  Has the situation changed?  How are the local authorities addressing the problem? In which ways is the Ibiza Preservation Fund contributing to the cause?

With the funds we raise we can fund environmental research which is tailor-made for the benefit of the island. In collaboration with the Balearic University for example, we are currently researching the so called “capacitad de carga “, in other words how much of everything the Island is capable of bearing: how many cars, how many boats, how many tourists, how much water can be used for day… These observations on sustainability will be useful to politicians engaged in making considered and informed decisions with regard to Ibiza, and hopefully encourage the promotion of regulations to protect the natural beauty of the Island.

How can locals and tourists contribute to respecting the natural beauty of environment?

We all are responsible for it. Ibiza is a very democratic place, in the same way everyone is welcome to enjoy the beauty of island and its crystal clear water everyone should be responsible for the preservation of the environment and supporting its values. We are currently promoting a project called “The Sea, a Shared Responsibility” which aims to change for the better our behaviour towards the environment.

Another interesting project is “One euro per table” that sees diners at local restaurants donating one euro for each table – diners can refuse to do it but fortunately declinations are rare!  Some restaurants managed to raise up to 15.000 Euros, which represents level of support for IPF for which we are very grateful.

A keyword to preserve the environment?

Recycling. Recycling grey water, solar energy and trash. Grey water is dirty, but not always so dirty. It can be only soapy water – so it can be re-used it in the house .. solar energy: solar panels are now more common and they come also with good ranges in terms of design and sizes. Solar panels are now compulsory in new constructions and architects should try to influence their clients in their designs … And also recycling bins. Villas in Ibiza tend to be vast in size and recycling should become part of our everyday habits. These are small things, but very useful to make a start on creating a basis for a better habits to preserve our environment.
